Gabi Cadenhead
poet and composer

Biography

Gabi Cadenhead is a poet and composer living on unceded Gadigal and Wangal land. Their creative practice is one of intersections – between story and sound; between performance and protest; between embodiment, queerness and the sacred. They hold a Bachelor of Music Studies (Composition) and Bachelor of Arts (English and Studies in Religion) from Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the University of Sydney.

Gabi is a winner of the Bread and Butter Poetry Slam and has performed at the National Young Writers Festival. In 2022 they were selected for Express Media’s Toolkits: Poetry program, taught by Madison Godfrey, and their poetry has been published in a variety of student literary journals as well as #EnbyLife Journal. Gabi enjoys facilitating creative writing workshops, providing safe spaces for participants to banish their inner critic and embrace writing as a spiritual practice. Gabi’s journalism is regularly published in Insights Magazine, and their editing experience spans student journals and Red Room Poetry's Poem Forest.

Gabi's chamber music has been workshopped and performed by acclaimed professional musicians including Ensemble Offspring and Sydney Chamber Opera, as well as emerging peers Ensemble MUSE, Quart-Ed and The Judgement of Paris. Their music has been performed at Vivid Sydney and Extended Play New Music Festival, and their work Echo received an Honourable Mention in the Flute New Music Consortium’s Composition Competition. Gabi has also composed for Sydney and Newcastle Youth Orchestras and Gondwana Choirs.

Gabi is co-founder of sacred arts project Marion St with their friend Mikali Anagnostis, and they are part of the artist collective at Annandale Creative Arts Centre.
